Smart televisions
IPTV on a Samsung or LG smart TV
Sometimes the simplest option in the house, sometimes the most frustrating — and which one it is comes down entirely to how old the television is.
Samsung and LG do not run Android
Samsung sets run Tizen, LG sets run webOS. Neither is Android, which means Android players simply do not exist for them. You are limited to whatever IPTV players your television's own store carries, and that catalogue shrinks as a model ages.
Setting it up
- Open the television's app store and search for an IPTV player.
- Install one that is still being updated, and note whether it wants a playlist or a portal.
- Some players on these platforms ask you to add your playlist through a web page on your phone, using a device code shown on the television. That is normal — and much easier than typing on a TV remote.
- Enter the details we sent, let the list load, then test two channels properly.
When the store has nothing suitable
This is common on sets more than about five years old, and there is genuinely nothing you can do from the outside: the manufacturer controls the store. Your options, best first:
- Add a £30 Android stick or box. It plugs into HDMI, brings a proper app store, and will outlive the television. This is what we suggest to almost everyone.
- Cast from a phone or laptop. Works, but it is a fiddle every evening.
- Use a games console or another box you already own, if it has a suitable player.
We sell no hardware, so there is nothing in this advice for us.
Why the built-in apps get slower
Televisions are built to a price and kept for a decade. The processor that felt adequate in year one is running heavier software by year five, and the manufacturer's attention has moved to this year's models. Video decoding is handled by dedicated hardware and stays fine; it is the interface that decays. That is exactly the pattern an external stick fixes.
Picture settings worth changing
- Turn off motion smoothing for film and drama — it is what makes everything look like a soap opera.
- Use Movie or Filmmaker mode rather than Dynamic; Dynamic is a showroom setting.
- If the set has an HDMI game or PC mode, it lowers processing delay — useful for live sport.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Will it work on my 2016 Samsung?
It depends entirely on what its store still carries. Check before ordering — and if the answer is nothing suitable, a cheap Android stick solves it permanently.
Can I install an APK on a Samsung TV?
No. Tizen does not take Android app files at all, which sidesteps that whole question.
Does a smart TV need a separate box?
Only if its own store has no suitable player, which is common on older sets and rare on new ones.
The app was there and has disappeared.
Manufacturers do remove apps from older models' stores. Frustrating, out of everyone's hands, and the £30 stick is the reliable answer.
